Respectfully disagree Phil. The CDC shows that for the period of weeks ending 2/1/2020 to 4/25/2020, 527 of the 14,141 deaths in Washington State were from Covid with the death rate 95% of normal.
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/index.htm
We are not New York or New Jersey, especially not New York City where approximately 35,000 people live within each square mile. Far more than 527 lives in this state are being destroyed by the economic damage being wrought by the house arrest light being imposed upon all citizens. Somehow we can all go to to the big box stores...Costco, Wal-Mart, Target, Freddy’s, etc., where large numbers of people can feign social distancing while small businesses where people would go out their way to truly social distance are shuttered. Many will never reopen. There’s zero common sense there. It’s not promoting health and safety.
At this point many of us feel we had the virus last last year or early in this one and would love an antibody test to find out. Regardless, everyone knows how to social distance and can choose wisely to protect themselves and be mindful of others. The most immune compromised will have to be more more careful than most, but that’s how it works when you are immune compromised and I say that as someone who raised an immune compromised child and have a disabled husband.
Most of us prefer freedom over Big Brother.
Appreciate the conversation Karen. We'd both be suspended for 2 years for even breathing next to a conversation like this on nextdoor :)
Thanks for a safe place to chat with neighbors Watch Camas!
My earlier point was more towards the national conversation and not WA or Camas specific. Numbers up nearly 700% of expected on pneumonia deaths are not typical regardless of where they are. It would actually be harder to show a spike like this in a larger metro than it would in a place like Camas where four deaths might represent a 700% spike over "normal", you'd likely need hundreds or even thousands to move the needle in a place like New York.
As in Camas with land valuations, a clearly abnormal spike like that usually means something beyond business as usual.
To your point about visiting Walmart, Costco and the like - I agree that none of that is "safe" either as this is microbial and you can't fully escape it even with the best intentions. My larger point though is that there is a difference between walking on the sidewalk, walking on the freeway or not walking at all. You can get struck by a car in all three scenarios, but in one of them it's much more likely. Without proper testing in place, unfortunately I feel that some (small amount according to recent polls) are happy to push for "reopening" with an "out of sight out of mind" approach to any aftermath.
I don't fear first for myself here, I fear for my neighbor.
I fear for the rail that someone touches in an absent moment as they carry the virus asymptomatically, followed soon by an elderly woman that loses her balance and grabs that rail for support before moving the hair out of her face and accidentally brushing against her lip in an equally absent moment. She dies two weeks later and it's not traced to the original person that touched the rail (not that there was intention), so nobody really thinks about it and she's just another number. Some of the dearest people in my life are immunocompromised, I can't lose them because someone needed a haircut (that is said by a man desperately in need of a haircut by the way. Recent photo of me in my new hat below).
I am 1000% in favor of A plan to reopen - It just needs to be accompanied by provably trustworthy testing and realistic recovery thresholds. I personally can't take any argument seriously, that I've heard to date, that doesn't agree with that. If we want to resume the pace of life from before, we should earn it with undeniable proof and we shouldn't be afraid of putting ourselves up to that standard unless we're ultimately just fine "cutting the wheat from the chaff". I am not.
Again, happy to have a place like Watch Camas where we can have an adult conversation about a relevant topic that people will ultimately have fundamental disagreements on. Those are the conversations worth having after all, otherwise it's all just a bunch of scared people in a circle identifying animal poop :)
Might want to also consider the following:
Maybe CV is a normal flu hyped by Big Pharma and being taken advantage of by an Insolvent Banking System to have people distracted while they hand themselves Trillions of Dollars and Destroy the Economy to carpet bomb the leftovers.
Time will tell on this.
As usual, plenty of wisdom in what you say Doug. In the end, I think there's a little bit of both in the stew. All indications for me are that it's real AND it's a cash grab - never waste an opportunity.
I just don't know how my small business (Applebee's) is going to weather this storm... Pray for me? Donate? Supplies are uncomfortably low and my kids need caviar and champagne.
